The Burnout Cycle
Burnout rarely arrives all at once.
It develops through patterns that can be recognized—and interrupted—before collapse becomes the only exit.

Locate yourself without judging yourself.
People may move back and forth between stages, skip stages, or experience several at once. This model is educational, not diagnostic.
01
Stage 1
Pressure
Demands begin to outpace the time, energy, support, or control available.
Common signs
Urgency, tension, irritability, racing thoughts.
Reflection
What demand is asking more of me than I can sustainably give?
Interrupt here: Name the pressure before responding to it.
02
Stage 2
Overcommitment
You answer pressure by taking on more, often before checking your capacity.
Common signs
Automatic yeses, rescuing, packed schedules, guilt about limits.
Reflection
What did I agree to without consulting my capacity?
Interrupt here: Pause before making the next commitment.
03
Stage 3
Overperformance
Doing more becomes proof of worth, safety, competence, or belonging.
Common signs
Perfectionism, hyper-responsibility, difficulty delegating.
Reflection
What am I trying to prove—or prevent—by doing this much?
Interrupt here: Choose a good-enough standard for one task.
04
Stage 4
Neglect
Your body, relationships, needs, and inner life are repeatedly postponed.
Common signs
Skipped meals, lost routines, isolation, ignored warning signs.
Reflection
What essential need keeps getting moved to tomorrow?
Interrupt here: Restore one basic need today.
05
Stage 5
Exhaustion
Your reserves thin out and ordinary tasks begin costing more than they should.
Common signs
Fatigue, reduced focus, dread, emotional volatility.
Reflection
What is my body communicating that my schedule has ignored?
Interrupt here: Reduce one demand and increase one source of support.
06
Stage 6
Collapse
The system can no longer maintain the pace, performance, or emotional containment.
Common signs
Shutdown, illness, absence, conflict, inability to function normally.
Reflection
What must stop—not merely slow down—for safety to return?
Interrupt here: Seek appropriate support and stabilize immediate demands.
07
Stage 7
Numbness
Disconnection becomes protection when feeling and responding seem too costly.
Common signs
Detachment, cynicism, autopilot, loss of meaning or pleasure.
Reflection
Where have I stopped feeling because feeling became unsafe or exhausting?
Interrupt here: Reconnect gently through safe people, truth, and small sensory anchors.
